There’s nothing more peaceful than sitting on a dock, or in a boat and casting a line into one of our fresh water lakes while taking in the scenic view. Whether or not you have a boat, your options seem endless with over 100 fresh water lakes to choose from in the Kamloops area – and all within a one hour drive!

Being it is nearing end of summer, it is recommended that you visit lakes at higher elevations. Why? Because when the temperature in the water rises, the fish go deeper in the lake to stay cool, which is good for the fish, but not so good for the fisherman as they can be much harder to catch. Since we are known for the best fresh water fishing in B.C., here are a few local favourites.

Jocko Lake

At Jocko Lake (otherwise known as “Jacko”) you can practice your Fly or Spin-cast skills in this low elevation water. This popular lake is fully stocked with Rainbow Trout and the best time of the day to catch one, is in the early evening close to the shore lines. With no overnight camping, this day-use only lake has various walking trails and beautiful scenery. A detailed map and more helpful tips can be found here.

Six Mile Lake

Drive up to Six Mile lake and you will find a boat launch, a few picnic tables and toilets. With only 4 overnight campgrounds available this Lake is used mainly during the day. Fly fishing only. Anglers, remember to carry different types of fly patterns and change it up if there isn’t any action. Also, it’s important to try different areas of the Lake as you may find some areas have more action at certain times of the day. Purchase your Fresh Water license here.

Edith Lake

A great weekend option for families and lone Anglers is Edith Lake. This Lake is stocked with Eastern Brook Char, has an overnight campground, Toilets, a boat launch and a daily fee. Although it is not a great Lake to fly-cast, you will find a fishing dock on the South West end which offers those without a boat (or children) to try their luck. Driving directions here.

Pass Lake

This Fly only lake is about 20 km north west of Kamloops on the Lac Du Bois Road. This lake offers a campground, toilets, picnic tables and a daily fee. This scenic lake is very popular with fly fishers as the nutrient rich water and abundance of insect hatches allows the fish to grow rather quickly. So be prepared and arrive early as the campsites are often busy. Being a smaller lake, boats without motors are ideal to maintain the serenity of the crystal-clear waters. *Hint: pack your mosquito repellent!
