While we enjoy the warm temperatures and longer days that the summer brings, it is important that we are well prepared for the days when the heat is extra humid. It is important that we check in on each other during these times as seniors sometimes have a harder time dealing with extreme heat.

Seniors can’t adjust as well as younger people with sudden drops or spikes in temperature. Along with this, seniors have a higher likelihood of having medical conditions, or taking prescription medications that may heighten their sensitivity further.

Here are 5 ways to keep yourself safe in the heat while living at the Residence Kamloops independent living community:

  1. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential all the time; however, it is even more important throughout the hot summer months.  Drinking lots of water is the best way to hydrate a body. If you have trouble with drinking a lot of fluids, consider eating foods with a high water content; such as cucumbers, watermelon, lettuce, and celery. You can also add these fruits and veggies into your water for extra flavour without the added sugar. In addition to this, avoid or reduce your alcohol intake as alcohol is a diuretic which prompts your body to remove fluid from your bloodstream.

  1. Keep your living space cool

It is important to ensure there is a good amount of cool air flowing through your living space. At the Residence Kamloops independent living community, we provide air conditioning throughout the warm months at all times for your safety and comfort.

In the case of the air conditioning ever going out, having a back-up portable fan on hand would be beneficial in this situation. If you do not have any of these devices on hand, limit the use of your oven, keep shades, blinds, and curtains closed during the day, and open your windows later at night. These little changes will aid you in keeping your space as cool as possible.

  1. Dress for the weather

Dressing for the weather does not always mean wearing shorts and tank tops, it is important to consider other factors of your clothing as well. Many synthetic fabrics are not as breathable in the heat as organic fabrics such as cotton. Wearing clothing with at least a 60% cotton content is a good choice to keep your body cool. Along with the material, consider wearing loose fitting and light coloured clothing as well as this will also improve your comfort.

  1. Avoid outdoor exercising

Though the thought of working out in the beautiful sunny outdoors may seem like a fun idea, it will not be as enjoyable during the extreme heat. Instead, consider starting off your day with an early morning walk, or ending your day with a late evening walk when the sun is not up.

You could also consider taking your work-out to an indoor gym facility like the five-star health & fitness room at The Residence at Orchards Walk where you can be in an air conditioned environment that will aid in your energy levels and breathing capability. If going to a gym does not interest you, consider going for a dip at a local indoor pool, or even taking a long walk at a shopping mall or other indoor space. Find something that keeps you safe and also makes you feel happy.

  1. Protect your skin

It is important to protect your skin from the sun everyday, but especially in the summer heat so that you can protect yourself from burns and damage to your skin barrier. Using sunscreen and re-applying it throughout the day is vital in protecting your skin from the sun. Consider using a sunscreen that is at least SPF 15 and follow the time frame on the back of your bottle for re-application. Consider using a fragrance-free and oil-free sunscreen if you suffer from any skin irritation issues to reduce the chances of any discomfort. In addition to sunscreen, make sure you have adequate gear to block your exposure to the sun. Bringing along a sun hat, sunglasses, and other protective clothing should you need it is a smart idea on days where you won’t be able to avoid being out in the direct sunlight.

During the next wave of heat your community faces, make sure to stay hydrated, keep your living space cool, dress appropriately for the weather, be careful with your exercising environment and choices, and protect your skin to ensure your health and safety.
