With the start of a new season, it’s time for a new beginning (or at least time to refresh your current space). Probably having spent most of your time indoors last season, you may notice that there is a lot of clutter that has accumulated in your suite at the Kamloops retirement community. With the opportunity to step out more and do activities outside of your suite, you will notice that it’s not really a scene you want to come home. That means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get some cleaning done so you can enjoy your time relaxing when you come back feeling tired from your day’s activities.
Here are some cleaning tips for seniors living at a Kamloops retirement community:
Declutter your retirement suite
As you get more and more comfortable living in your new Kamloops retirement community, things might not end up where you want them to be. Whether it’s clothes being left on a chair or bench somewhere, or your dishes and cookware not being stored in the correct cabinet, you will begin to take notice of these things when you do get around to doing a deep clean. If you are finding yourself only wearing a handful of clothes and not touching the other ones folded neatly in your drawers, chances are they might never be worn by you. If this is the case, donate articles of clothing that you no longer wear. The same goes for extra dishes, cookware or decorative items you feel could be put to better use by someone else.
Dispose of expired medications and foods
When you first moved into the Kamloops retirement community, you likely brought your medicine cabinet with you. Regardless of whether new purchases or were half empty when you brought them with you, your first instinct might be to assume that there is still a few months or even years left until they expire. It is recommended you double check the expiry dates on all of them every season and make a note of the expiry dates that are coming up. The food in your fridge and pantry will also have expiration dates that could be approaching much quicker than your medication, so try and check those every week if it’s in the fridge and every month or so if you have food in the pantry. Dispose of everything that is expired to avoid accidentally consuming.
Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
While you’re spring cleaning in your Kamloops retirement community, one thing that sometimes gets overlooked is the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your suite. Whether you have heard it go off before or not, you should check to see if it is turned on, has batteries, and it will go off in the case of an emergency. Your suite should also be equipped with a fire extinguisher that is easily accessible should you ever need to use it. Most fire extinguishers have gauges on them which indicate when it needs to be changed, but if you have any questions feel free to ask one of the staff members at The Residence.
