Being active is a key piece of staying healthy in your retirement, but, when summer comes around, it can be tough finding ways to exercise in the heat. Luckily there are quite a few ways seniors can get active, get fresh air, and stay safe this summer while still having a ton of fun!

Grow your own fruits and vegetables

If you’re looking for a fun, low impact way to get your body moving while seeing tangible results (the “fruits” of your labour), try gardening! Even a smaller patio space can become a garden oasis with a little gardening TLC. You’ll have the additional bonus of creating a great outdoor space that you can enjoy this summer!
If you’re looking for plants that will flourish in the Kamloops climate, try these:

  • Warm weather veggies like beans, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and cantaloupe.
  • Good bee plants like Sunflowers, clover, dandelions, honeysuckle, poppy, campanula, or wisteria.
  • Drought resistant bushes like junipers, dwarf scotch pine, lilacs, mock orange, or silver buffaloberry. The Residence at Orchards Walk.

Take a dip in a Kamloops pool

Swimming or water aerobics are a great way to work out your body while maintaining low impact on your joints. Plus, in the summer taking a dip is a great way to stay cool while staying active. In Kamloops, the Canada Games Aquatics Centre, Westsyde Pool, and Brock Outdoor Pool are great places to go swimming, plus seniors get a discounted rate!

See the Grandkids

Kids are little balls of energy, so keeping up with them can be a great workout in itself. Spending a fun day with the grandkids will keep you on your toes while giving you a chance to grow and bond with your family.

Go for a Picnic at Kamloops Lake

Go out for a walk in our community! Nearly 29km long and located on the western side of Kamloops, Kamloops Lake is a beautiful place to spend a summer afternoon. There are several parks along the lake, but if you’re looking for something closer to town, check out Riverside Park! During the summer you may even be able to catch ‘Music in the Park’, held nightly at the Rotary Bandshell.
